about mmfd and liam’s line on episode 5 (under the cut because: spoilers)
i understand why some people are very angry at it and i definitely agree that it was not at all an okay thing to say
however i really think it’s unfair to look at the scene as just “wow liam sure is a fucking douchebag”
because something we’ve been told very clearly about liam is that, to put it bluntly, he’s fucked up. and he’s fucked up in very similar ways to rae, that’s why they get along so well. previously, we’ve only been shown this in ways that make very clear how much they can help each other because of this.
however, in the moment their relationship becomes most definitely sexual, the problems arise. this scene shows very well how they can easily feed each other’s insecurities: liam’s own hate of his body extends to rae’s, making her feel ashamed for wanting to be sexual in the first place.
because having sex with your clothes on is actually a perfectly in character thing for liam: it allows him to do what he wants (something he tries to make it look like it’s a frequent thing) without having to expose himself physically and, by extention due to his issues, emotionally. it’s his way to deal with it and, on his mind, it works perfectly - so, he assumes rae is going to see it on the same way and makes that very problematic remark.
i’m not trying to say what he said wasn’t bad (because it was) or that rae shouldn’t have said anything when she was clearly uncomfortable (because she should) or even that the sex should have happened in the first place (because it shouldn’t, and this scene shows very well why). i just think this is a lot more complex than the way fandom is seeing it in general.
